The calculation made by Eurostat includes greenhouse gases emitted by services and goods consumed in the EU. RRA correspondent in Brussels, Bogdan Isopescu with details:
Reporter: According to Eurostat data, each citizen of the Union is responsible for emitting an average of nine tons of greenhouse gases, equivalent to carbon dioxide per year. This pollution comes from the manufacture of goods and services consumed, a decrease of 10% compared to the previous year.
This indicator takes into account emissions generated in the entire production chain of consumption in the Union, regardless of where in the world these goods or services were produced, so also including imports. The lowest carbon footprint per person is in Portugal with 6.5 tons, equivalent to carbon dioxide, followed by Bulgaria with 6.8 and in the same place 3, Romania and Sweden.
At the other extreme, the highest carbon footprint per person is in Cyprus, 14.8 tons, followed by Ireland with 14 and Luxembourg with 12.7.
Total emissions generated by goods and services consumed in the Union amounted to 4 billion tons, but if we exclude imported products and services, this footprint is only 3.3 billion. Compared to 2013, this type of emissions has decreased by around 15.5%.
