A female clay figurine, over 7.500 years old, was recently discovered near the municipality of Sfantu Gheorghe.
Archaeologists from the National Museum of the Eastern Carpathians believe that the artifact offers insight into early Neolithic communities.
The statuette, found in the eastern area of the municipality of Sfantu Gheorghe during preventive research for the expansion of the electrical grid, comes from a settlement dated between 5.800 and 5.500 BC, belonging to the Starcevo-Cris culture, one of the oldest agricultural cultures in southeastern Europe.
The discovery is exceptional, because in southeastern Transylvania only 39 points with Neolithic vestiges are known, and such pieces are very rare, says Dan Buzea, archaeologist at the National Museum of the Eastern Carpathians in Sfantu Gheorghe.
Dan Buzea: In a pit, along with several ceramic fragments, osteological remains, this piece was also discovered, a statuette modeled from clay, column-type, very interesting, with raised eyes, with a tuft, stylized arms, breasts, therefore a particularly important and unique piece of its kind. The piece is representative of this period, contributes to the knowledge of this civilization and is a piece that is now in an expertise process, with a view to classification in the Treasure category.
