The way in which information is influenced and manipulated in the online environment, the role of artificial intelligence in this process, as well as the impact of digital transformations on democracy and society, were topics of debate on Friday, at the European Parliament Bureau in Romania, which organized an event that brought together MEPs, experts, representatives of the academic environment and students.
The discussions addressed numerous topics related to the evolution of information manipulation, the impact of disinformation, social networks and artificial intelligence on trust in democracy, especially among young people, but also opportunities and risks generated by the use of AI in the public space.
Reporter: Diana Surdu - University Professor Alina Bargaoanu, from SNSPA, identifies the new elements that artificial intelligence brings to social networks.
Alina Bargaoanu: We should talk less about content and more about distribution, about amplification, about data collection for personalized, even individualized distribution, about the infection of large linguistic models and about the fact that people are rented by artificial intelligence. I believe that artificial intelligence greatly fuels the war on knowledge, more precisely, the war on human knowledge.
Lawyer specialized in legal techniques, Dumitrita Rogojinaru, insists that we see artificial intelligence as an ally, as a tool that can make our lives easier, not as an enemy.
Dumitrita Rogojinaru: It is, indeed, a very big problem how we control deep fakes and AI in the political space and everything that political advertising means. I think that one of the problems that will arise in the long term will be what we do with fundamental rights, where there is freedom of expression and where there is censorship.
Experts are divided when it comes to artificial intelligence, but what is certain is that AI is part of the daily lives of most people and that it will change the world.
