The Social Democrats are electing new leadership at a congress in Romexpo. Sorin Grindeanu, who is the only candidate for president, has already announced that a "new chapter for the Social Democratic Party" will follow, based on responsibility, unity, and solutions.
The team he is proposing consists of five first vice presidents and 20 vice presidents. The congress is also expected to approve changes to the party's statutes, as part of the effort to win back voters.
It is a congress without much excitement for the current interim leader of the Social Democrats, Sorin Grindeanu. More than 3.000 delegates, branch members, senators, deputies, and PSD ministers came to Bucharest to vote on the Social Democratic leadership for the next four years.
The only candidate for the position of party president is Sorin Grindeanu, as Senator Titus Corlatean announced his withdrawal from the race about a month ago.
Sorin Grindeanu proposes a larger leadership team consisting of five first vice presidents and 20 vice presidents, eight of whom will be regional and 12 will be responsible for specific areas of activity.
MEP Claudiu Manda will be the party's secretary general, replacing Paul Stanescu.
Regaining the trust of its own electorate is the stated goal of the future PSD leadership, and interim leader Sorin Grindeanu said that the meeting is about recognizing the party's own path and the expectations that each member has of the future PSD leadership.
Former Social Democratic leaders Adrian Nastase, Mircea Geoana, Victor Ponta, and Marcel Ciolacu, among others, have already arrived at Romexpo.
