More than 10 thousand students from 321 schools in Romania will take part in the main phase of PISA 2025 between May 12 and June 9. This study assesses, every three years, the ability of 15-year-olds to solve problems and identify solutions to real-life situations in three domains: reading, math and science.
This year is the first time in Romania that around two thousand students will also be tested in English. The participation in the PISA 2025 study contributes to the correlation of Romanian education with developments in internationally performing education systems, say representatives of the Ministry of Education.
Felicia Mocanu has details, "The latest PISA results are those published in December 2023 for the previous year's data. The results obtained by Romania place our country in 45th place in mathematics, among the 81 countries that participated in the first international educational attestation, organized by the OECD.
Marian Suta, director of the National Center for Policy and Evaluation in Education and a math teacher, believes there are several reasons for these results: "I think teachers should also focus more on applications and practical problems in the classroom and less on theory. It's a problem with students as well, because they are drawn between studying mathematics and visualizing, looking on networks, where it's easier and more relaxing."
What would be the solutions so that our students rank much better than in previous years?
Marian Suta: "We might have surprises. The generations have also changed and already in the primary cycle there is an improvement in results."
The 2022 PISA lecture and reading results show a score of 428 points for Romania, similar to the previous test, and in science the score is also 428 points, two points higher than the 2018 PISA test."
