USR has decided to support Nicusor Dan in the second round of the presidential elections. The party is led on an interim basis by the mayor of Timisoara, Dominic Fritz, after Elena Lasconi resigned due to the poor results obtained in the elections. Dominic Fritz said that the priority at the moment is to prepare for the second round of elections, and that talks on a possible entry of the party into government will take place after 18 May.
Reporter: The interim president of USR said that the decision to support Nicusor Dan's candidacy in the second round of the presidential elections was taken almost unanimously within the party's Political Committee.
Dominic Fritz called for unity and maximum mobilisation to preserve the pro-European path and defend democratic values. He also commented on PSD's decision to leave the governing coalition.
Dominic Fritz: We are in a crisis of state, a crisis of institutions, a crisis of trust and this new interim, including in government, is another manifestation of this crisis. Politics, democracy in Romania needs to regain the trust of citizens and that is why I think it is to be welcomed if all parties start a programme of cleansing, of reflection and in which all parties once again reach out to voters.
Dominic Fritz said that discussions about a possible entry of USR into government will take place after 18 May.
Negotiations will be based on the mathematical reality in Parliament, where a coalition will be needed to form a future executive cabinet, said the interim leader of the USR, who does not support the idea of a possible minority government.
