People who commit acts of domestic violence will be required to follow a specialized assistance program, otherwise they risk fines between 5.000 and 10.000 lei. This is one of the amendments adopted by Parliament to strengthen protection of victims of domestic violence. The project, initiated by PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR parliamentarians, was voted on Wednesday in the Chamber of Deputies, as the decision-making forum.
Iulia Gherman has details: "The aggressors will be required to attend psychological counseling sessions, and if they are alcohol or psychoactive substance users, the court may order, with their consent, integration into a detoxification program. The protection order will be issued by the court in the locality where the act was committed and will be extended for a period of two years, if a similar measure has previously been applied to the aggressor.
In addition, local authorities will be informed about the issuance of a protection order within a maximum of five hours of its issuance, so that the victim can quickly benefit from social assistance.
Eva Csep, UDMR deputy: In January, 2026, we had 12.000 calls. Out of 12.000 calls, 4.000 became criminal offenses. We need to do something to make the community responsible and to help these women.
Deputy Nicolae-Mirel Ion explains why S.O.S. Romania abstained from voting.
Nicolae-Mirel Ion: I think we should work more on prevention. By strengthening coercion too much we end up risking abuses.
The draft law will be sent for promulgation.”
