The United States Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, sent a message of appreciation for Romania's role within the North Atlantic Alliance on Wednesday, underlining the close cooperation between the two states in the field of defense.
"Within NATO, allies like Romania demonstrate increased capacity and responsibility. For over 20 years, Romania, as a NATO ally, has been constantly collaborating with the United States to achieve common defense objectives. This partnership is stronger than ever", said the American diplomat, quoted in a post published on Wednesday on the official Facebook page of the US Embassy in Bucharest.
Ambassador Whitaker reaffirmed Washington's commitment to Romania, "as a reliable NATO ally, a vital strategic partner and a driver of security in Europe."
According to him, "the solid presence and enduring commitment of the United States to Europe remain unwavering, including the support given to the Eastern Sentry mission."
US reduces its military presence in Romania
The United States is reducing its military presence in Romania, the Ministry of Defense in Bucharest announced on Wednesday.
The decision, which is part of Washington's strategy to relocate some resources to the Asia-Pacific region, is not expected to have a significant impact on American operations in the Black Sea area.
"By resizing the rotational force that also operated in Romania, the presence of American troops in Romania actually returns to the level before the war in Ukraine", President Nicusor Dan said on Wednesday in a post on the X network.
The head of state also said that "the deterrence of threats on NATO's Eastern Flank is offset by the consistent addition of military equipment and the increase in the presence of European forces, in full agreement with the American partner."
Also on Wednesday, Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu assured that "Romania remains a safe country in which the allied presence is considerable."
