Three people prosecuted for fraud involving European funds for irrigation

Three people have been prosecuted by the European Public Prosecutor's Office in Bucharest in an investigation into fraud involving European funds.

The money was obtained through the Agency for Rural Investment Financing, and the suspects are accused of using over €1 million for their own benefit, even though they had requested it for the modernization of irrigation systems in three municipalities in Valcea County.

The amount represented an advance on a total of approximately four million euros in non-reimbursable funds that they had requested using false documents.

If found guilty, the defendants face prison sentences of between two and seven years, according to RRA reporter Diana Surdu.
