Statements by President Nicusor Dan, in Helsinki
Nicusor Dan: As you know, there are several programs for the Eastern Flank both within NATO and within the European Union and the purpose of this meeting is to operationalize these programs among the Eastern Flank countries and especially the European program dedicated to the Eastern Flank.
Reporter: How big is it...We were also looking at the negotiations that took place in Berlin yesterday. What is your hope and do you personally believe that Russia really has the desire to sign a peace agreement, because everything is contradictory from one week to the next, even from one day to the next, depending on the discussions held.
Nicusor Dan: What is important for us is to offer Ukraine the possibilities to have a back in the negotiations that it is conducting. This means the financial possibility of continuing the war and it means security guarantees for the immediate post-war period. I am personally quite pessimistic about Russia's intention to have peace in the immediate future, but on our side we must be prepared to offer Ukraine all the necessary mechanisms to negotiate this.
Reporter: There is a plan by Romania together with the allies on the eastern flank for a scenario /.../ with the Russian army at the mouths of the Danube, because this topic has been discussed a lot.
Nicusor Dan: Okay. We should not start from this, but within NATO and, correspondingly, in plans approved by the Supreme Council of National Defense there are all possible scenarios, only what is important for us now is, on the one hand, to support Ukraine in order to maintain the front line and, all this time, in the years to come, to arm ourselves in such a way as to deter any potential future aggression. Thank you!
