Information about counterintelligence measures taken by the authorities is declassified only when circumstances allow it, said President Nicusor Dan, referring to the case of the spy from the Republic of Moldova detained by the Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT).
The head of state emphasized that he cannot speak about the subject of an investigation.
Nicusor Dan: There is information that I have, but, because it is a security matter and because it is an ongoing investigation, I cannot tell you more than what is public. There are a lot of people for whom counterintelligence measures exist and the decision to make such a matter public happens, let's say, once in 90 cases, when the case is, on the one hand, sufficiently well-defined, and on the other hand, it does not prejudice other ongoing counterintelligence measures.
The former deputy director of the Intelligence and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova was detained by DIICOT for treason, and today he awaits the decision of the Bucharest Court of Appeal on the proposal for preventive arrest. He was caught on Monday at the Timisoara Airport and was brought for questioning in the capital. Investigators claim that his espionage activity endangered Romania's national security.
