Local authorities in the capital and five counties located in the south and southeast of Romania are preparing for a code red warning for particularly heavy rain, an alert that will come into effect at 9:00 p.m. and will be valid on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
One of the measures announced on Tuesday afternoon is the suspension of in-person classes in kindergartens, schools and high schools on Wednesday throughout the area covered by the bad weather alert, in Bucharest, in the counties of Ilfov, Giurgiu, Ialomita, Calarasi and Constanta.
The acting mayor of the capital, Stelian Bujduvenu, stated that the representatives of the city hall are in constant contact with the providers of public services and utilities to ensure their proper functioning, and the decision to suspend classes was taken in order not to endanger children, parents and teachers.
Stelian Bujduvenu: Our priority is to assure the people of Bucharest that they are not in danger, to ensure that the city is not blocked, that there is no rush to go and pick up the child from school and take him home. We had long debates, we have been on the phone this morning and in continuous contact with APA Nova, those who will ensure that the canals and Bucharest are emptied.
We are in constant discussions with the Bucharest Public Transport Company and all operators precisely to ensure that we have efficient public transport, which is not blocked during the red flood code. From the discussions and satellite monitoring that our colleagues have had, it seems that on the eastern part of Romania the cyclone has deviated a little from the main trajectory. If we are lucky, it will also bypass us on the Bucharest - Ilfov side.
