Electrica cyber attack under investigation

The Electrica Group has been cyber-attacked, but the company's critical systems, as well as the distribution and supply of electricity, were not affected. The announcement was initially made by Electrica and later confirmed by the National Cyber Security Directorate.

The director of communications at this structure, Mihai Rotariu, explained that the attack was ransomware and that it is under investigation, which is why he could not provide more details.

"Based on preliminary data, the critical power supply systems have not been affected and are functional, and the investigation is currently ongoing, so we will not be able to provide more details at this time. We also stress the need and urgency to develop a sectoral circle for the energy sector, as an additional specialized capacity", said Mihai Rotariu.

The Electrica Group, a key player in the Romanian electricity distribution, supply and generation market as well as one of the most important players in the energy services sector, has around 4 million users.

Electrica has been a majority private company since 2014 and is listed on the Bucharest and London stock exchanges.
