Informal Meeting of EU Ministers for Cohesion Policy: Bucharest 11-12 April

EU Ministers responsible for Cohesion Policy are to have an informal meeting at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest on 11-12 April. Event takes place under Romania’s EU Council Presidency.
Meeting - to be chaired by Romanian Minister of European Funds, Rovana Plumb – will be attended by European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Crețu, Ministers responsible for Cohesion Policy in EU Member States, representatives of Committee of the Regions (CoR), European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR), European Investment Bank (EIB), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), European Commission and Secretariat General of EU Council.
Agenda:
Investment priorities of Cohesion Policy during programming period 2021-2027
Negotiations at EU level address future Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and main policies funded by EU budget. As regards Cohesion Policy, negotiations focus on reducing regional disparities and addressing new challenges, aligning to European Semester and ensuring flexibility that responds more promptly to regional and local needs.
Leaders’ guidance will have a direct impact on programming of European funds. Debate is not intended to prevent outcome of negotiations on the MFF but to highlight the impact of leaders’ political choice on implementation and results of the Cohesion Policy without affecting EU budget.
Cohesion Policy in the framework of leaders’ strategic agenda 2019-2024
Motto of Romania’s EU Council Presidency is “Cohesion, a Common European value” and emphasizes the unity between EU Member States and the importance of reducing economic, social and territorial disparities at EU level.
Debate takes place ahead of EU Summit in Sibiu (9 May 2019), an important moment in the design of a stronger, more united, more coherent and more democratic Europe. Final Report of White Paper on the Future of Europe, adopted by the European Commission on 1 March 2017, will be presented during the summit.
