Young people between the ages of 19 and 26 can get the HPV vaccine for free starting Wednesday, and people between the ages of 26 and 45 can purchase the serum at half price.
HPV infection is responsible for the occurrence of at least five types of cancer and for all cervical cancer cases.
Almost 3.400 women in Romania are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year and over 1.800 lose their lives due to this disease.
The vaccination schedule differs depending on age, and the family doctor is the one who issues the prescription and performs the vaccination, explained gynecologist Mihaela Bot.
Mihaela Bot: For adolescents between the ages of 11 and 14, they must receive two doses of vaccination, at zero and at six months. Therefore, the family doctor is responsible for issuing the prescription. One of the parents will have to go to the pharmacy to pick up the pre-filled syringe and return to the family doctor's office for the child to receive the vaccine. Between 15 and 18 years old, young people also benefit from free vaccination. The vaccination schedule involves three doses, at zero, two and six months. Zero is the first dose of the vaccine. For the article of the law that also involves free vaccination for the age group 19 - 26 years old, also free, also in the family doctor's office and also three doses, zero, two and six months.
Specialists point out that the vaccine protects both young women and men against infection with the HPV virus, which can cause serious conditions, including cancer.
The virus is transmitted mainly sexually, but also through direct skin-to-skin contact or through contaminated objects.
