USR wants to limit special pensions for local elected officials.
A bill to this effect is under public consultation in the Chamber of Deputies until the end of January.
The initiators, USR deputies Claudiu Nasui and Cristina Pruna, want to repeal an article in the Administrative Code that stipulates that mayors, deputy mayors, presidents, and vice presidents of county councils are entitled to a monthly allowance for reaching retirement age.
The amount depends on the number of months in office and can exceed 18.000 lei, which is almost seven times higher than the average pension in Romania.
The bill is justified by the difficult budgetary context and is presented as a test of credibility for the political class by giving up their own privileges. The Senate is the deciding chamber in the case of this bill.
