The new prime minister could be nominated next week, when it is possible that an agreement will be reached on political cooperation with a view to forming a government.
This estimate was made by Senate President Ilie Bolojan in an extensive press conference in which he presented in detail the country's financial situation and some of the conclusions of the discussions that have taken place in recent days on measures to reduce the budget deficit.
A call for mobilization to finalize the package of measures was also launched by the PSD.
Next week is also decisive because the authorities in Bucharest have until June 20 to present the European Commission with a concrete plan to reduce the budget deficit, the level of which affects the fiscal balance and influences the interest rates at which Romania borrows on the international market.
Under these circumstances, measures to increase certain taxes are mandatory in the immediate future, the Liberal leader pointed out.
In recent years, government spending has been much higher than revenue, which has led to the highest level of budget deficit, said Senate leader Ilie Bolojan.
He explained that whatever government formula reaches the Victoria Palace, tax increases are inevitable, and Romanians must be told the truth, namely that some corrective measures are needed, most of which are unpopular but necessary.
Ilie Bolojan: The short-term outlook means a correction that can only be achieved by combining revenue increases, investment rescheduling, and spending cuts. The order should have been reversed, starting with spending cuts, prioritizing investments, and if that fails, only then resort to increasing revenues, but unfortunately, due to the year and a half of elections and pre-elections, during which not much has been done in this regard, I estimate that no future government will be able to avoid increasing revenues, which unfortunately means increasing taxes and duties.
Liberal leader Ilie Bolojan also said that the prime minister, who will most likely be appointed in a few days, needs authority, as the measures that will be decided upon will not be easy to implement.
