The involvement of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) in combating corruption will be limited by law, but also by civilian control of its activities and by the courts, explained President Nicusor Dan after presenting the new defense strategy, which provides for the Romanian Intelligence Service's participation in the fight against corruption.
The institution will not have powers in criminal investigations, but only in gathering information, the head of state stressed.
"SRI is an intelligence service that is divided into departments based on strategy and, subsequently, on the implementation plan. Some of these departments deal with counter-espionage, others with sabotage, organized crime, and all sorts of things. By explicitly including the chapter 'Corruption' in the strategy, we will have a unit or section within the SRI that will deal with corruption, and its sole task will be to gather information on the phenomenon of high-level corruption", explained Nicusor Dan.
Regarding the appointment of the new SRI leadership, President Nicusor Dan estimated that he will appoint the director at the beginning of next year.
