The increase in VAT and other taxes and excise duties will come into effect on August 1.
The Constitutional Court recently rejected AUR's complaint, through which the opposition attempted to block the first package of measures to reduce the budget deficit, according to sources close to the CCR, quoted by RRA reporter Diana Surdu.
The bill, which will now become law, provides for an increase in VAT rates, an increase in excise duties, cuts in certain bonuses, and a cap on pensions and salaries.
These measures were challenged in the CC after Parliament rejected the motion of censure filed by the AUR, S.O.S., and POT.
The three parties argued, among other things, that the government had abused the procedure of assuming responsibility to impose a heterogeneous package of measures that seriously affect millions of Romanians.
The prime minister responded that the alternative would have been much worse and that these measures had prevented the country from being downgraded at the last minute to “junk” status, which is not recommended for investment.
