A simple motion in the Senate — targeting Interior Minister Catalin Predoiu, whom AUR parliamentarians accuse of abuses and dysfunctions in the activity of the institution he leads.
Reporter (Alina Stanuta): Interior Minister Catalin Predoiu rejected the criticisms in the simple motion and pointed out, among other things, that street crime has decreased during his mandate. There are 30.000 police officers on the streets daily, Catalin Predoiu added, despite the institution losing over 75.000 employees in recent years.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has recently seen consistent increases in equipment for combating drug trafficking, noted Catalin Predoiu, who stated that three tons of drugs were confiscated in the first 11 months of this year.
Additionally, Catalin Predoiu declared that Romania is the safest European country regarding illegal migration.
The document submitted by AUR to the Senate claims, among other things, dysfunctions in the Ministry of Internal Affairs' activity, Romania's exclusion from Visa Waiver, rising drug consumption, and the politicization of the Ministry. During the debates, representatives from PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR rejected the allegations in the opposition's document, characterizing it as a political exercise with no basis in reality.
Meanwhile, parliamentarians from AUR and "Pace - Întâi România" (Peace - Romania First) reproached the minister for, among other things, failing to present any vision for the fight against drug trafficking and consumption.
AUR’s simple motion was rejected in the Senate with 51 votes against and 31 in favor.
