At the "Sfanta Maria" Children's Hospital in Iasi, medical protocols were not fully followed and existing legal procedures were not applied - considers USR deputy Emanuel Ungureanu, member of the Parliament's Health Committee, after visiting the medical unit, where several deaths due to a hospital-acquired infection were recorded, and discussing it with the institution's management.
He emphasized that the hospital's epidemiologist did not submit any report on the situation and only after 14 days was an information note sent to the DSP. Emanuel Ungureanu criticized the lack of mechanisms that would allow for the rapid identification of the causes in such situations.
Emanuel Ungureanu: Those children died of nosocomial bacteria in a hospital in our country and we do not know who is to blame. The manager says that it is not known even to this day what the source of the infection with this bacteria is. The Ministry of Health is coming, the State Sanitary Inspection is coming, state authorities are coming to a hospital that still does not know what the source of the death of six children is. Fines will be issued, people will be fired, but it is clear that no procedures were followed here and it is not possible to establish, I don't know how many days after the first death, who is to blame. There are no video cameras in the ICU, there are no means of monitoring with lenses. In fact, we have no way of objectively knowing who was wrong, because even the hospital management does not know who.
Colleagues from Radio Romania Iasi recall that at the "Sfanta Maria" Children's Hospital, nine children were infected with a bacteria, and six of them died. Subsequently, a body of the intensive care unit at the medical unit was closed.
The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete, is coordinating the on-site checks that his control body is carrying out, together with the State Sanitary Inspection. On Friday, medical director Catalina Ionescu said that the reports were made according to protocol, after three cases were confirmed, but the children did not respond to treatment.
