On Romania's National Day, President Nicusor Dan called for calm and balance in discussing social issues, emphasizing that, beyond the inevitable noise, common ground on which to build can be found.
The head of state gave a speech at the reception organized at the Cotroceni Palace on December 1.
President Nicusor Dan called for temperate public discourse, while criticizing the proliferation of slogans and the radicalization of debates.
The head of state also spoke about the phenomenon of corruption in his speech.
Nicusor Dan: Romania is a corrupt country, and Romanians are right when they say that they do not see any willingness on the part of the Romanian state to fight corruption, and they are even more right when they are outraged by the fact that corrupt people come and give them lessons in morality on television. However, we are less corrupt than we were 20 years ago. It is true that all the corruption during this period has held us back. It is also true that in recent months we have not seen corruption at the top of the Romanian state.
On the other hand, President Nicusor Dan said that Romania has many areas of excellence in education, but overall the education system is weak.
At the same time, although the healthcare system leaves much to be desired, we are seeing the first new hospital buildings constructed with funding from the NRRP, and the private economy is dynamic, the head of state said, despite a very large trade deficit and the lack of economic policies.
