The metropolitan area of the capital is very important for citizens and needs a better connection with the city centre, said for Radio Romania News the prefect of Bucharest, Rares Hopinca.

He added that development projects such as the extension of the metro, major road infrastructure and the metropolitan area should not be affected by this year's elections.

Rares Hopinca: The citizens of Bucharest and those who come to Bucharest to study or to look for a job are looking to live in the areas most suited to their needs. And this metropolitan area exists, whether we recognise it or not. What we need to do is to better connect this metropolitan area with the centre of Bucharest. And here we are talking about public transport. There are other very serious investment projects of the Romanian Government, we are talking about the 10 radial roads that are mostly in the process of being acquired or even awarded, and these roads, in conjunction with the A0 motorway, which, again, is at a fairly advanced stage of execution, will make this metropolitan area much better connected to the city. Of course we will also have an election year, it is very good for the Romanian democracy to have this exercise, but the elections must not obstruct the development of the city and in this regard will be our work at the Prefect's Office of Bucharest.
