On Wednesday, in a joint session, Parliament adopted the national defense strategy for the period 2025-2030. The document was presented to parliamentarians by President Nicusor Dan, who pointed out, among other things, in the chapter on threats, the hybrid war waged by Russia against Romania and several European countries, corruption, the gap between the overall evolution of Romanian society and the way in which the public administration responds. Nicusor Dan also referred to internal risks and vulnerabilities.
Nicusor Dan: With regard to internal risks and vulnerabilities, I would emphasize the reduced capacity of public administration on multiple levels, corruption, large-scale tax evasion, the quality of education, critical thinking and school dropouts, demographic decline, and the fragmentation of state policies in the area of technology.
Following the presentation by President Nicusor Dan, debates were held in parliament on the national defense strategy. Alina Stanuta summarizes the views expressed.
Reporter: With 314 votes in favor, 43 against, and three abstentions, Parliament adopted the national defense strategy for the next five years. During the speeches, PSD parliamentarians pointed out that the document identifies risks, vulnerabilities, and challenges, but also highlights opportunities that can transform Romania into a safer state.
For their part, the liberals, through Senator Nicoleta Pauliuc, pointed out that after its adoption, the strategy must be implemented through public policies, while those from USR mentioned that the biggest threat to Romania is the Putinist regime.
UDMR also supports the national defense strategy and the central concept of the document on solidarity and independence.
Votes in favor of the strategy also came from the opposition, with AUR announcing that the document should also have included measures to combat poverty and a food and energy security strategy.
The 43 votes against came from POT and PACE - Romania First parliamentarians, who criticized the document, saying that, in their opinion, it confuses national security with the defense of the country.
