The coalition is close to reaching a compromise on resuming the legislative process to change the retirement system for magistrates and may promote the new law by the end of the month, President Nicusor Dan said.
Regarding the increase in the gross minimum wage, he believes that the decision must be carefully considered because a possible increase could drive many companies out of the market and implicitly contribute to higher unemployment.
The head of state answered journalists' questions after attending an event organized by the Concordia Employers' Confederation.
President Nicusor Dan said that the parties in the governing coalition are close to reaching a compromise on magistrates' pensions.
The head of state said that next week he will meet with the leaders of the governing parties to discuss this issue, as well as next year's budget.
The Romanian president believes that pension reform can be completed by November 28, the deadline set by the European Commission.
Nicusor Dan: There is time for the government to submit the bill to parliament and for it to be debated in a fast-track procedure. The question is whether anyone will subsequently challenge it in the Constitutional Court and how long that will take.
Are you certain that the opinion of the Superior Council of Magistracy will come in less than 30 days so that the act can be adopted?
Nicusor Dan: Yes, it's part of the discussion.
President Nicusor Dan also made statements regarding the increase in the minimum wage.
Obviously, we would like salaries in Romania, the minimum wage, to be high. It is always a matter of balance between what the economy can afford. That is why a discussion between the executive, employers, and unions is needed, because increasing the minimum wage can take a lot of companies out of the competitive market and put people out of work, and then those people will prefer to stay at their current salary rather than find themselves unemployed.
The head of state has announced that he will hold a press conference next week and will answer several questions from journalists.
