The National Defense Strategy for the next five years is one of the topics on the agenda of the Supreme Council for National Defense meeting, which started at Cotroceni Palace at 2:00 p.m. The Council members are also debating the plan that Romania will propose to the European Commission regarding the SAFE program.
RRA correspondent Oana Bala reports: "The National Defense Strategy will be submitted for approval by Council members after it has been debated publicly, and President Nicusor Dan announced that the document has been supplemented with proposals from civil society, citizens, and institutions with responsibilities in the areas of defense, security, and foreign policy.
The National Defense Strategy, presented publicly by the head of state, is based on the concept of solidarity and independence. Russia's hostile actions are the main threat to national security, but the document also identifies other vulnerabilities, ranging from demographic decline to the state's weak administrative capacity. According to the new strategy, the intelligence services will play an important but clearly defined role in the fight against corruption.
The funding application for the SAFE program is also on the agenda of the meeting. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan estimated that by the end of the first quarter of next year at the latest, it will be known exactly which projects will be funded through this program. The Council members will also analyze the report on the activities carried out and the results achieved in the first seven months of this year to prevent and combat drug trafficking and consumption, which are considered a threat to national security.
