Timisoara hosted for the first time the "Great Dictation", a unique competition organized on Sunday, September 21, in Libertatii Square, modeled after the famous Parisian project "La Grande Dictée des Champs Élysées".
The event brought together 500 participants of all ages, the youngest being 9 years old and the oldest 87 years old.
The aim of the event was to bring back to the forefront the beauty of the correctly written Romanian language, in an era dominated by keyboards and screens.
The participants took their seats in the benches provided by the Nikolaus Lenau High School and the Banatean National College, writing on paper the text dictated by special guests: actors Medeea Marinescu, Bogdan Spiridon and Matei Chioariu.
At the opening, Mayor Dominic Fritz read an excerpt from a book by Timisoara writer Daniel Vighi, inspired by the multicultural Banat.
“There is a concentration and respect for the Romanian language in the air. That is what we want to convey: to celebrate the beauty of the Romanian language. I am very excited today”, said Mayor Dominic Fritz.
The event was presented by Laura Sgaverdea, manager of Radio Romania Resita, who described the atmosphere as “fabulous and moving”.
Those who went through the “Great Dictation” experience said that the texts were not difficult, but the emotion was intense.
The participants’ works will be corrected until Thursday, when the winners will be announced during an event organized in the Rozelor Park.
