A first in the last 50 years: Controlled emptying of the Vidraru reservoir begins

Friday marks the start of the first stage of the controlled emptying of the Vidraru reservoir, with an estimated completion date of February 28, 2026.
Hidroelectrica states that this is the first complete emptying of the Vidraru dam since 1974, a major technical project necessary for the assessment and modernization of the dam and its equipment after almost 50 years of continuous operation.
The water from Lake Vidraru will be discharged in a controlled manner into the Arges riverbed, with a flow rate of between 20 and 47 cubic meters per second.
The Vidraru hydroelectric power plant, commissioned in December 1966, uses the hydroelectric potential of the Arges River over a 28 km long section between Cumpana and Oiesti.
The reservoir has a total volume of 465 million cubic meters.
