The twenty-nine NATO Chiefs of Defense, as well as the invitee Chief of Defense from the Republic of North Macedonia, gathered in Ljubljana, Slovenia 13-15 September 19 for the final Military Committee conference of 2019. Romanian delegation was led by Chief of Defense General Nicolae Ciucă.

During the Conference, the Allied Chiefs focused their attention on NATO’s operations, missions and activities, the Deterrence and Defense of the Euro-Atlantic Area, NATO’s Warfighting Concept and Military Instrument of Power.

As the Alliance is confronted with challenges from multiple directions, the Chiefs of Defense noted the necessity of ensuring the readiness and responsiveness of NATO’s forces, and the need to continue to have credible and effective deterrence and defense.

Throughout their discussions, the Chiefs of Defense stressed the continued commitment to NATO’s three core tasks: collective defense, crisis management and cooperative security.

The Military Committee (MC) is the senior military authority in NATO and the oldest permanent body in NATO after the North Atlantic Council. The Military Committee, headed by its Chairman, meets frequently at the level of permanent Military Representatives, and three times a year at the level of Chiefs of Defense, to discuss NATO operations and missions and to provide consensus-based military advice to the North Atlantic Council on how the Alliance can best respond to global security challenges.
