Romania has attracted, by the end of last year, EUR 17 billion in EU funds, out of EUR18.8 billion that had been allocated for the 2007-2013 financial framework, thus registering the lowest absorption rate, below the level recorded by other EU Member States such as Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia or Hungary, according to a report published by the National Bank of Romania (BNR).

According to the document, two-thirds of the 17 billion were used for the development of transport infrastructure, environmental protection and the development of educational infrastructure – lifelong vocational training, but also for the development of micro-enterprises.

The rest of the attracted funds have been directed towards labor education and training, in rural areas also, the development of social inclusion and the efficiency of economic activity, including by financing research and development projects, according to the document.
