A military ceremony was held today in the capital at the Heroes of the Fatherland monument in front of the Carol I National Defense University, on the occasion of Romania's National Independence Day, Victory in Europe Day and Europe Day, marked annually on May 9.
A religious service was held and wreaths were laid on behalf of state institutions.
Similar events took place in the county capitals and other towns across the country in cooperation with local authorities.
On May 10, 1877, the motion tabled by the Assembly of Deputies and the Senate was promulgated by Prince Carol I, becoming law and officially marking the birth of the independent Romanian state.
The proclamation of state independence was the high point of the political and diplomatic efforts to free Romania from Ottoman rule.
