A network specializing in methamphetamine production was dismantled this week.
It was a joint operation by prosecutors from DIICOT Iasi and judicial authorities in the Republic of Moldova, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, with the support of Eurojust and Europol.
Sixteen people were taken into preventive custody. Diana Surdu has the details.
Reporter: Eighteen searches were carried out in the four countries, where three illegal laboratories were discovered and dismantled, yielding 5 kg of methamphetamine, 40 kg of ephedrine tablets, 10 liters of toluene, 280 kg of caustic soda, various quantities of phosphorus, and 70 kg of residues resulting from the production of methamphetamine.
The equipment used for the illegal production of high-risk drugs and two vehicles used for transport were also confiscated.
Evidence revealed that the criminal group, made up of Romanian and Moldovan citizens with accomplices in the Czech Republic, procured the precursors and basic substances, which they converted into pseudoephedrine in artisanal laboratories.
The substance obtained was transported through Romania to the Czech Republic, where members of the group had links with several people involved in converting pseudoephedrine into methamphetamine in a conversion laboratory, which was then sold to consumers and dealers in European Union countries, particularly the Czech Republic and Germany.
Investigators established that the Moldovan members of the group procured and transported the drug precursors, while the Czechs converted them into methamphetamine in artisanal conversion laboratories and handled the sales.
To conceal the illegal activity, one of the members of the criminal group used a commercial company located in Iasi as a front.
