US Embassy in Bucharest on Constitutional Court decision

United States Embassy in Bucharest reports that it follows closely the developments following the Constitutional Court's decision on the institutional conflict between the President of Romania and the Justice Ministry. US Embassy states for Radio Romania that this is a matter that concerns Romania’s internal affairs, according to RRA Reporter Carmen Gavrilă.

Romania’s Constitutional Court decided on Wednesday that President Klaus Iohannis has to remove from office the Chief Prosecutor of Romania’s National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA), Laura Codruta-Kovesi. Decision of the Constitutional Court came short after Justice Minister Tudorel Toader accused Kovesi of going beyond her authority. Minister’s request for the dismissal of Kovesi was refused by President Iohannis, who said that motivation was unjustified.
As a reaction to the Constitutional Court decision, hundreds of people went out on the streets again on Wednesday, to protest near the government building.
President Iohannis – who has the final say in the appointment and removal of the Chief Prosecutor - is yet to address his decision on the matter.
