Commissioner Jourova expects Romania to follow CVM recommendations

Romania must follow the recommendations of the European Commission Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM), said on Tuesday, in Bucharest, EU Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Vera Jourova, when asked about Romania’s progress under the CVM, with reference on dismissal of Attorney General Augustin Lazăr.
European Commissioner met, on Tuesday, with Romanian Justice Minister Tudorel Toader, at the Ministry of Justice.
"I am here because I need to prepare Romania's Presidency at the EU Council. I have been very productive, I have proposed many legislative projects and I need Romania to finalize them", Vera Jourova said on arrival at the Ministry of Justice.
On Minister of Justice request to dismiss Attorney General Augustin Lazar, European Commissioner said that this is 'Romania's problem'.
Asked to comment on CVM recommendation that this revocation should be stopped, Vera Jourova said: "I expect Romania to follow CVM recommendations. (...) My concern is about the European Prosecutor's Office, which should become operational in 2020 and I would like Romania to be represented there. There is my interest and I will discuss with the Minister of Justice".
European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Vera Jourova, is on official visit to Romania and has scheduled meetings with Justice Minister Tudorel Toader, Chief of the Supreme Court, Cristina Tarcea, and President Klaus Iohannis. Tuesday agenda included meetings with Marius Pîrvu, President of National Consumer Protection Authority, to discuss key dossiers in the field, and Ancuta Gianina Opre, Chair of National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Surveillance.
On Monday, Vera Jourova met with Minister of Finance, Eugen Teodorovici.
According to the Representation of the European Commission in Bucharest, purpose of the visit is to discuss priorities in the Justice area with the forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the latest developments in Romania's judiciary system.
