We are fewer and older
Articol de Radiojurnal, 14 Ianuarie 2026, 19:41
Romania's population was approximately 19 million on January 1 last year, down by 24.000 compared to January 1, 2024, according to data presented today by the National Institute of Statistics.
The main cause of the decline is the negative natural increase, which was not offset by the positive difference between those settling in Romania and those moving abroad.
Another phenomenon mentioned in the study is the marked demographic aging, as the proportion of the population over 65 continued to increase, while that of those under 14 continued to decline.
