Greatest challenge Romania currently has is maintaining the independence of the Judiciary, as it faces attacks by false news or public statements - Chief Prosecutor of Romania’s Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) Laura Codruta Kövesi said on Wednesday in a speech at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

DNA Chief also highlighted the situations in which lifting the immunity of politicians and attempts to amend the legislation were denied.

Romania’s Chief Prosecutor made these statements at a high-level debate in New York to mark the 15th anniversary since the adoption of the UN Convention against Corruption.

In response, Romanian Justice Minister Tudorel Toader said one cannot talk about false news in the case of numerous acquittals, legal conflicts of a constitutional nature, or files where prescription of criminal liability or abuses and investigation of prosecutors for unjust lawsuits occurred.

"If we want to be honest, we also have to present the negative aspects that characterize the Romanian Judiciary”, Tudorel Toader said.
