Romanian President Klaus Iohannis participates, on October 23, to the Future of Europe debate in the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg. On this occasion, President Iohannis will present Romania’s vision on the future of the European Union, as Romanian Presidential Administration announces.

Participation of Romanian President in this event is part of the series of debates on the future of the European Union to which heads of state and government from the EU Member States were invited. Initiative was launched in January 2018 in the context of Brexit and will continue until the end of the current mandate of the European Parliament, in May 2019.

On the occasion of the visit to Strasbourg, President of Romania will take part in a working session together with President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, representative of the current Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU and the leaders of the EP political groups.

Debate on the Future of Europe takes place during the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg (22-25 October). Highlights include reducing the use of plastics, promoting clean vehicles, reform of road charging rules, new plans to improve tap water quality, better industrial poultry farming.

Today, there will be a vote on the new rules on drinking water quality that target pollutants and encouraging the use of tap water. MEPs will also adopt Parliament's negotiating position on the European Union budget for 2019 and will propose to allocate more funds to support young people, research programs and infrastructure. MEPs will also vote on strengthening the Schengen information system to fight terrorism, cross-border crime and illegal migration.

A ban on the sale of single-use plastic items such as plates, cutlery or cotton buds, making up over 70% of marine litter, will be put to a vote on Wednesday. EU countries imposing time-based road use charges will need to switch to distance-based charging, under draft rules to be put to the vote on Thursday. A resolution calling on the EU to raise its emission reduction targets by 2030 will be put to a vote ahead of the Katowice climate talks. MEPs are also going to vote to reduce the use of antibiotics in farms, to remove drug-resistant bacteria from human food.
