US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper has warned NATO allies using China-developed 5G telecommunication networks that they are risking military relations and intelligence relationships among partners, because they would give Beijing some control over their own communications systems.

Radio Romania Correspondent in Washington, Doina Saiciuc, says this is not the first warning of the Trump Administration regarding the devices developed by Huawei: "Every Chinese company has the potential to be an accomplice in Bejing's state-sponsored campaign to steal technology", Pentagon Chief said in a speech in Maryland at a conference hosted by Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, operational component under Department of Homeland Security (DHS) oversight.

Mark Esper's warnings come amid an intense campaign by the Trump Administration to keep products created by Chinese telecommunication companies, including Huawei, out of future 5G broadband networks.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had previously threatened that Washington would cease intelligence exchanges with allies who did not respond to the Trump administration's demands.

Pentagon Chief Mark Esper said he traveled to Europe two weeks ago and delivered a message to NATO allies about the security risks posed by 5G networks built with Chinese components, including for commercial institutions such as banks, hospitals and the media".
