“Scrumbie de Dunăre afumată”, a smoked Pontic shad from the Danube Delta, Romania, is now a registered Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), states a press release from the European Commission Representation in Romania. The fish is processed whole, salted and cold-smoked, an ancient method specific to the area.
Now Romania has five registered PGI products: "Magiun de prune Topoloveni" (2011), Salam de Sibiu (2016), Telemea de Ibănești (2016) and Novac afumat din Țara Bârsei (2017).
There are 1,400 protected products at European level, Rador says.
