President Klaus Iohannis and his wife, Carmen Iohannis, were received at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo by Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Japan's Empress Masako.

The discussions took place between the President of Romania and Emperor Naruhito, respectively between the First Lady and Empress Masako.

According to Japanese protocol, the Emperor and Empress of Japan do not discuss political topics.

Instead, themes with a strong humanitarian impact and relevant to the nation are preferentially addressed by the Japanese imperial couple.

In this context, it is possible to refer exclusively to the suffering caused to people by some events such as the coronavirus pandemic or the war in Ukraine.

President Klaus Iohannis also meets with the Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, the two having scheduled official talks, as well as the signing of the Joint Declaration establishing the strategic partnership between Romania and Japan.

The two officials will hold joint press statements.
