Post-2020 digital policy: Council adopts conclusions

10 Iunie 2019, 00:26

Council of th European Union adopted, on June 7, conclusions on the future of a highly digitised Europe beyond 2020: ‘Boosting digital and economic competitiveness across the Union and digital cohesion’.

Conclusions highlight the main priorities and challenges for a strong, competitive, innovative and highly digitised Europe. They refer to the importance of supporting innovation and encouraging European key digital technologies, respecting ethical principles and values in artificial intelligence, strengthening Europe’s cybersecurity capacity, improving e-skills, and developing the gigabit society, including 5G. They also underline the need to increase the number of women in the sector and to enable all vulnerable groups to reap the benefits of digitalisation so that no one is left behind.

Alexandru Petrescu, Romania’s Minister for Communications and the Information Society, President of the Council:EU digital policy must retain an ethical and human dimension. We should avoid any unnecessary red tape that would hamper innovation. All Europeans, and all European businesses, irrespective of their size or location, should benefit from digitalisation.

Conclusions will assist in the development of the EU's future digital policy.
