Mountain Rescue: Over 100 emergency calls in 24 hours

Articol de Radiojurnal, 23 Ianuarie 2022, 17:16

In the first 24 hours of the Union of the Principalities Day mini-holiday, the National Mountain Rescue Dispatcher received over 100 calls requesting emergency interventions.

More than 120 people in difficult situations have been rescued. Most calls came to the Mountain Rescue Services in Sinaia and Brasov.

Rescue operations following the received calls also happened in Lupeni and Voineasa, Busteni and Vatra Dornei, Predeal and Muntele Mic in Caras-Severin County.

A particularly difficult intervention took place last night. Arges mountain rescuers recovered a 71-year-old tourist who had fallen 70 m in the Leota massif. He was part of a larger group of people and was properly equipped for hiking in the mountains, but suffered a hard hit to the head from the fall.

In the Fagaras mountains, the Balea Lac tourist area is very dangerous during this period for those who venture on the slopes. Sabina Dudasu from the Salvamont Sibiu public service told the RRA correspondent, Carmen Vulcan:

Sabina Dudasu: Taking into account the snow and wind, the risk of avalanches at over 1.800 m is high, 4 out of 5, the triggering of an avalanche of medium or maybe even large size being possible through a weak overload too. At less than 1.800 meters, the risk is moderate, 2 out of 5. We recommend tourists to avoid adventuring at more than 1.800 m. Tourist routes at these altitudes remain closed.
