Two Romanian citizens, a woman and an 8-year-old boy, lost their lives after the roof of a restaurant in Nea Plagia in Halkidiki, Greece, collapsed as a result of extreme weather phenomena, very strong wind, rain and hail, which affected northern Greece on Wednesday night.

Another Romanian citizen, injured after the storm on Wednesday in Halkidiki, was taken to the hospital, states a press release from the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE).

Due to weather conditions and power cuts in the region, communication with local authorities is difficult. Romanian consular team is now in the area to get more information on the incident and to provide consular assistance.

Consulate General of Romania in Thessaloniki monitors the situation and maintains contact with local authorities, with Romanian citizen who is hospitalized and is ready to provide consular assistance, including issuance of death certificates for the two Romanian citizens and ensuring the necessary documents for their burial in Romania.

Six tourists lost their lives and at least 30 people were injured by the fierce storm that hit Halkidiki peninsula on Wednesday night.
