The Romanian film Blue Moon / Crai Nou won the Concha de Oro trophy, for the best film at the 69th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain.

The film is the debut of director Alina Grigore. The competition is organized annually in the Basque Country, and the first edition took place in 1953.

Blue Moon is a film that follows the psychological evolution of a young woman from a rural area who wants to escape from a violent and masculine entourage.

Actress Ioana Chitu plays Irina, a 22-year-old girl, the youngest of a dysfunctional family, who has a sick mother and an absent father. Irina is dominated by her uncle and aunt, who oppose her big dream, that of studying in Bucharest.

Director Alina Grigore also signed the screenplay for the film, for which she says she was inspired by the reality of the village where she grew up; so did the main actors.

Alina Grigore thanked her whole family as well as the festival for the trophy. The jury was chaired by a director from Georgia, who last year won the trophy in San Sebastian for a debut film.

According to the jury, the Romanian director was awarded this prize for her commitment to cinematic language and for the courage with which she approached her own story.
