Romanian Border Police have rescued almost 3.000 migrants on the Mediterranean in the last two months. Yesterday they returned home with the ship "Stefan cel Mare" from the Coast Guard.

Between 11 August and 1 December, the surveillance ship "Stefan cel Mare" took part in the joint Themis operation, organized by the Frontex agency at the external maritime borders of the European Union.

The flagship of the Romanian Border Police carried out 20 individual patrol, surveillance, search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean Sea, in the south of Italy, together with the forces of the other participating Member States.

The Romanian border police rescued, transhipped and transported 2.082 migrants who were in danger on overcrowded and small boats.

Codin Avram, captain of the ship, police commissioner: We had two difficult moments, a rescue moment with two yachts, on a very, very rough sea, and the second one a fishing boat, also in storm conditions, we saved about 260 people.

A total of 54 border policemen took part in the missions, working in two shifts, 27 every two months. Wives and children eagerly awaited them in the Port of Constanta.

Wife: Two months, a pretty long time. He knows Daddy works on the ship, that he saves people, I showed him videos.

Due to the professionalism with which the Romanian border policemen acted during the missions, even in unfavorable weather conditions, all the rescued people were brought safely to shore, no victims being registered.
