Situation in Romania is discussed on Monday, October 1, in the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE). MEPs in the Committee meet tonight in Strasbourg to analyze the latest evolutions in Romania ahead of Wednesday's debate on the rule of law in the plenary of the European Parliament.

First Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, will also participate in the debate, according to an announcement on the LIBE website. There are two reports in the Committee's discussion.

The first refers to the progress made by Romania in the field of justice, under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism.

The second is the preliminary opinion of the Venice Commission on the changes in the laws of justice adopted this year by the Romanian Parliament, a document in which the Committee's experts believe that the new provisions could lead to excessive pressure on judges and prosecutors.
