President of Romania calls for resignation of Justice Minister

Articol de Oana Bâlă, 19 Octombrie 2018, 21:59

President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, considers that the concerns expressed on Friday, 19 October, by the Council of Europe’ Venice Commission with regard to changes to the laws of justice and criminal codes are an unequivocal signal that the current government and parliamentary majority must take into account, so that Romania will not be placed in an incompatible direction with the values of the European Union.

Head of State also points out that, by the conclusions presented publicly, the Venice Commission finds that changes to the laws of justice and criminal law distort the entire judiciary and generate negative effects, and that a number of newly introduced provisions will have direct consequences on criminal proceedings and cases in which politicians are involved.

Also, Romanian President considers that the Minister of Justice has definitely compromised his credibility, which is a good reason for him to resign from this position.

Iohannis also calls on Parliament to take into account the views expressed in the Venice Commission Opinion and to reassess, as quickly as possible, the amendments made to the laws of justice, Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Codes, so that the negative impact on justice and the rule of law ceases.
