President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis had a meeting, on Tuesday, with foreign ambassadors accredited in Bucharest. On this occasion, Head of State presented Romania’s main foreign policy directions and its EU Presidency priorities and assured that he would continue to defend the rule of law.

RRA Reporter: Romania's strategic foreign policy priorities remain unchanged in 2019; beyond increasing Romania’s role within the EU and NATO, central objective of strengthening and expanding Strategic Partnership with the United States will be maintained, President Iohannis said.

2019 is marked by Romania’s first-ever Presidency of the Council of the European Union, a mandate which takes place in a dynamic context, with challenges such as Brexit, migration, negotiation of the Multiannual Financial Framework and elections for  the European Parliament, Head of State underlined.

EU Summit in Sibiu on 9 May will be a key moment when EU leaders are to set up a clear vision with priority action lines for the future of the European Union and also intend to adopt a political statement for building a stronger EU.

In terms of foreign policy, Romania must remain a country where liberal democracy and the rule of law are fully consolidated, with an independent and effective justice, President Iohannis said, emphasizing that he would do everything to prevent these values from being affected. Regardless of dynamic Romanian domestic politics, in terms of European affairs, all Romanian decision-makers will act in a unified manner and as efficiently as possible so that Romania’s EU Council Presidency is conducted in the best possible conditions", Iohannis said.
