November 2017: Japanese Culture Month in Bucharest

The extensive series of events dedicated to Japanese culture and traditions takes place in Bucharest from 2 to 29 November.

Japanese Cultural Month starts, today, in Bucharest, at the Romanian-American University.

The event will open with an unprecedented presentation of kimonos designed by Master Nobuaki Tomita and will continue with a series of artistic films, exhibitions of stamps and old Japanese maps, calligraphy, origami and sushi workshops, tea ceremonies, book launches, conferences but also aikido and kendo competitions.

Mainly known as a kimono designer, Nobuaki Tomita, who is the President of the Kyokaori luxury clothing company from Kyoto, he made costumes of actors who played in more than two thousand Japanese movies and TV series. His kimonos are remarkable by prints representing famous landscapes from around the world.

According to a press release issued by the Embassy of Japan in Bucharest, other events organized under the Japanese Culture Month are: an exhibition of Japanese stamp since the Meiji era, which will be hosted by the Romanian Academy Library – the “Theodor Pallady” Hall, the Japanese Film Festival, the Japanese Cultural Week at the University of Bucharest (lectures, Japanese book presentations, exhibitions, Japanese language and culture workshops, Chai Party, meetings with Japanese students and teachers), The National Kendo Championship at the Apollo Sports Center, the opening of the Nobori Cultural Center (demonstrations and workshops of Aikido, Kenjutsu, Sushi, Origami, Shodo).

This year’s edition is organized by: the Embassy of Japan in Romania, Japan Foundation, the Romanian-American University, the Romanian-Japanese Studies Center “Angela Hondru”, the Romanian Academy Library, the Romanian Peasant Museum, the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures – the University of Bucharest, Japan Desk Scotland, Chado Urasenke Tankokai Romania, the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism, the National Museum of Old Maps and Books, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies, the Faculty of International business and Economics, the Department of Modern Languages and Business Communication, the Association of the Kendo, Iaido and Jodo Clubs, the Nobori Aikido Aikikai Sports Association.

Program

November 2: Kimono workshop and parade, attended by the designer Nobuaki Tomita. Place: the Romanian-American University (1B Expozitiei Blvd., Bucharest) -Kimono workshop (from 14.00 to 15.30); Room 315, 3rd Floor. Kimono parade (from 18.00 to 19.00); B Side, the lobby. The access is free.

November 2 to 12 (opening: November 6, at 14.00) Exhibition of Japanese stamp from the Meiji era Place: Romanian Academy Library – the “Theodor Pallady” Room (125 Calea Victoriei, Bucharest). The access is free.

November 6 to 8 The Japanese Film Festival – November 6, at 19.00 – Swing Girls (subtitles in Romanian) – November 7, at 18.00 – Ore monogatari/MY love STORY! (subtitles in English) – November 7, at 20.00 – Romance/Round Trip Heart (subtitles in English) – November 8, at 18.00 – Maku ga agaru/When the Curtain Rises (subtitles in English) – November 8, at 20.00 – Seto Utsumi/Seto and Utsumi (subtitles in English) Place: The National Peasant Museaum – The Peasant Museum Cinema (3 Kiseleff Road, Bucharest). November 6 to 12 Japanese Cultural Week at the University of Bucharest (lectures, Japanese book presentations, exhibitions, Japanese language and culture workshops, Chai Party, meetings with Japanese students and teachers) Place: The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Bucharest (7-13 Pitar Mos Street, Bucharest). November 13, from 12.30 to 14.00 “Japanese Gardens” – a conference held by Professor Takuhiro Yamada Place: “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism – The Fresco Hall (18-20 Academiei Street, Bucharest). The access is free.

November 16, from 10.00 to 12.00: Shodo workshop held by Master Calligraphist Taki Kodaira Place: The Romanian-American university, the 322 CSRJ Hall (1B Expozitiei Blvd., Bucharest). The access is free and is possible by registering between November 1 and 15; details: office@csrj.ro

November 22 – December 24 (opening: November 22, at 18.00): Exhibition of old maps of Tokyo. Place: The National Museum of Old Maps and Books (39 Londra Street, Bucharest). Tickets required for access (the access is free at the opening).

November 29, at 19.00: “Chanoyu and Zen.
