Romania is not in the situation of Poland or Hungary to be subject to sanctions by activating Article 7 of the EU Treaty, Justice Minister Tudorel Toader said today in Strasbourg. Declaration has been made following discussion, during the plenary session of the European Parliament, about latest developments on the rule of law in Romania, which worry the European Commission.

There are some solutions for a possible Emergency Government Ordinance, to correlate the laws of justice with the recommendations of the Venice Commission, Justice Minister said.

European Commission is increasingly worrying about developments in Romania and notes a regress in the reform process, said today the first Vice-President of the EU Executive, Frans Timmermans, at the plenary session of the European Parliament.

Frans Timmermans: Independence of the judiciary and its ability to fight corruption are essential for a strong Romania in the EU of today. If we are talking about this now, it is because we care about what happens to the Romanian people, who want to fulfill their European destiny, because we want to make sure that the system they live in is a democracy based on the rule of law and full respect for human rights, where corruption is fought in effectively and eliminated from society.

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) also call on the Romanian government to reverse course in the reform of the judiciary and avoid measures that would weaken the fight against corruption.

In reply, Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă said that the Romanian authorities are trying to create a fair and functional legal system for the citizens and not for the European institutions, courts or politicians. Romania will not divert from the European values, Prime Minister Dăncilă said.

MEPs will vote on a resolution on the matter during the November I plenary session.
